News Network - To promote teachers and students of our School to keep up with academic frontiers and understand the new trends of generative AI application in the field of translation, the afternoon of May 23 witnessed two events: a seminar on the construction of the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) program held in Room C411 of the School of Foreign Language Building, and an academic lecture themed "Exploration of Human-Machine Collaborative Translation Practice Modes Empowered by Generative AI" delivered in the Lecture Hall of the Library at Hongqi Campus. The events featured Professor Wang Shaoshuang, doctoral supervisor and Vice Dean of the Advanced School of Translation and Interpreting at Dalian University of Foreign Languages, as the keynote speaker. The seminar was hosted by Xie Qiu'en, Vice Dean (in charge of daily work) of our School, with the attendance of Vice Dean Li Huoxiu, Professor Zhang Jianping, Director of the MTI Center, teachers from the School of Foreign Languages, and MTI students. The subsequent lecture was hosted by Vice Dean Li Huoxiu, attracting active participation from teachers and students of the School.
At the beginning of the seminar, Xie Qiu’en extended a warm welcome and sincere gratitude to Professor Wang Shaoshuang for his visit. Professor Wang emphasized the need to shift mindsets, make good use of AI to improve translation efficiency, and noted that while AI can take on most translation tasks, high-end human translators are still indispensable in fields such as literature and law. He suggested that translation should transform towards elitism and interdisciplinarity, and teaching should focus on cultural and logical adaptation to address repetitive and colloquial issues in translation. The seminar also featured lively discussions on topics including employment, doctoral studies, and the publication of professional master’s theses. Teachers and MTI students raised questions about their doubts in the translation field, which were answered by Professor Wang one by one.
Subsequently, Professor Wang proceeded to the Library Lecture Hall to deliver the academic lecture themed “Exploration of Human-Machine Collaborative Translation Practice Modes Empowered by Generative AI”. Using vivid and accessible language, he systematically explained four modes of AI translation and three forms of translation practice, deeply interpreted the translation competence system model and the conceptual framework of intelligent translation literacy, and delivered an excellent discussion on the core literacy of translators. He then conducted on-site practical teaching using popular AI software such as ChatGPT, analyzed the functional characteristics of different software by comparing their actual performance in translation scenarios, shared a number of practical translation platforms and software resources with the audience, and specially reminded everyone to avoid dependency on AI. At the end of the lecture, Li Huoxiu stated that Professor Wang's sharing was rich in content and insightful, bringing cutting-edge academic concepts and practical methods that greatly inspired and benefited all teachers and students present.
This conference and lecture explored the impact of AI on the translation field, disseminated cutting-edge knowledge on generative AI-empowered human-machine collaborative translation practice modes to teachers and students of our School. It not only helps them keep up with the times and grasp new development trends but also broadens their academic horizons and updates their knowledge systems.
