Basic Information
“Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages” refers to the teaching of Chinese language for overseas non-native speakers of Chinese. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) is a professional degree that is awarded to talents engaged in teaching Chinese as a second / foreign language and spreading Chinese culture.
In 2008, Jiangxi University of Science and Technology (JXUST) applied for the approval of the major of Chinese International Education (formerly known as the major of Chinese as a Foreign Language) and began to enroll students in that year. The major has made great progress after more than ten years of leapfrog development. In 2019, it has been on list of the first-class Undergraduate Programs in Jiangxi Province. In 2020, JXUST applied for master's Degree in MTCSOL and was approved by the Degree Office of The State Council in August 2021. And the enrollment of MTCSOL postgraduates will start soon with the official approval of the state.
Characteristics
The MTCSOL of JXUST’s School of Foreign Languages, closely related to international Chinese language educational professions, has been characterized by various talent cultivation modes, high-quality and stable teaching faculty, as well as complete and effective practice platforms and special curriculums. It is aimed to cultivate the internationalized, multifunctional, applicational persons who are qualified to teach Chinese to speakers of other languages, thus accelerating the internationalization process of Chinese language. The cultivation of professional talents is based on the basic principles of practicality, professionalism and comprehensiveness. Through professional learning and professional training, students are: (1) competent for the teaching of Chinese and culture courses in their own country or other countries; (2) competent in teaching multi-country, multi-category, multi-level and multi-course Chinese language and culture courses; (3) competent in using strong skills to display and disseminate Chinese culture as well as carry out cross-cultural communications.
In 2019, the Students of Confucius Institute at University of the Punjab (CIPU)
came to our university for Chinese learning and Chinese culture experience.
Aiming at educating students to be professional CFL teachers, major courses emphasize practical application of knowledge. The courses focus on the cultivation of the varied capabilities, including teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, understanding Chinese culture, integrating Chinese culture with foreign ones and intercultural communication.
Therefore, a curriculum system is formed with core courses as the main body, module expansion as the supplement and practical training as the emphasis.
Drawing on the major-running experience, especially the cultivation of undergraduate talents in the past ten-odd years, our school is committed to the research of Theory and Practice of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Theory and Practice of Overseas Chinese Language and Culture Education, Chinese Local Culture and Intercultural Communication.
Such fields have delivered results as linguistics, pedagogy, culturology, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and Overseas Chinese Language and Culture Education.
In 2017, our university organized a summer camp to introduce Chinese culture
to ethnic Chinese in Rome and Italy.
Our students went to the practice base of Wang Yangming Research Center to study.
In 2018, our university hosted a Hakka Culture Summer Camp for helping ethnic Chinese teenagers in search of their origin
Tutor Team
At present, the discipline boasts a young and vigorous teaching team with a reasonable academic title structure, including 4 professors, 4 associate professors, 5 teachers with doctoral degrees. They all graduated from domestic famous universities, such as Zhejiang University, East China Normal University, Beijing Language and Culture University and Minzu University and once studied abroad with abundant overseas teaching experience and scientific research achievements. Three of the team are reputed as the youth backbone teachers in colleges and universities of Jiangxi Province. Meanwhile, experts from Higher Education Press, Beijing Youshi Chinese Online Technology Partnership, Shanghai Ziyu Cultual Communication Co.,Ltd., Xiamen Chinlingo Information Science& Technology Co., Ltd., Jiangxi Yiyou Education Consulting Co., Ltd., Jintan Gulin Sinology Academy in Taihe County, Jiangxi Province and so on have been employed as part-time tutors.
Teaching and Scientific Research
JXUST boasts a group of energetic and knowledgeable tutors, who are experts in doing academic research. In addition, teachers in the group are all concerned about the overall development of students. In the past five years, the faculty members have undertaken 3 national social science funds, 3 social science projects of the Ministry of Education, 26 projects at provincial level and 4 projects entrusted by enterprises. They have won 4 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards, and 3 Provincial Social Science Achievement Awards. Thanks to their efforts, 14 academic monographs and over 50 high-level papers have been published. Vast teaching and research resources and platforms at JXUST are available, such as the College of Chinese Language and Culture subordinating to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of China(OCAO),co-sponsored Confucius Institute at University of the Punjab(CIPB), Center for Pakistan Studies, Center for Chinese Language and Culture, and Center for the Research and Communication of Wang Yangming’s Philosophy.

Conditions
We boast a team of young and middle-aged tutors with academic expertise, high spirits, and great knowledge. In recent years, many provincial and ministerial-level vertical projects have been approved, including the National Social Science Fund of China, the Humanities and Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education, the Special Project of Language Resources Protection of the National Language Commission, and the Regional and National Research Projects of the Ministry of Education. It is home to 1 laboratory co-supported by the ministry and Jiangxi province, 2 characteristic laboratories like “Chinese Cloud” Lab, Chinese Talent Training Center. There are 12 school-enterprise joint training bases and 2 overseas joint training bases. There are more than 600,000 books in Chinese and nearly 20,000 books and periodicals in foreign languages related to this major. It has long-term subscriptions to Chinese professional periodicals such as Studies of the Chinese Language, Chinese Teaching In The World, Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies, Chinese Language Learning, TCSOL Studies, Chinese Language Globalization Studies and International Chinese Language Education. It has more than 40 Chinese and foreign language databases, such as electronic journals in Chinese and foreign languages, WanFang Master and Doctoral Thesis and CNKI full-text database, which can facilitate the retrieval of Chinese and foreign language materials and provide a reliable teaching and research platform for graduate students.
With practical, professional and comprehensive talent cultivation as principles, our MTCSOL program aims to enable students to master the basic theories and teaching skills of Chinese language international education through professional learning and training, and to have strong skills in displaying and disseminating Chinese culture and conducting cross-cultural communication. The students in this program will equal to engage in international Chinese communication, international promotion of Chinese, research and development and teaching in related fields with rigorous and realistic style and noble professional ethics, moreover, be able to master multiple foreign languages.
