Faculty of Foreign Studies

Faculty of Foreign Studies (FFS) was founded in 1993 under the name, Foreign Studies Department. In March 2003 the name was changed to the FFS.

The FFS is composed of seven departments: English for non-English majors, English for graduates, English for English majors, International Economics and Trade major, Japanese, TCSOL and Foreign Teachers. It also has three research centers: Research Center of Mining Trade and Investment, Research Center of Overseas Chinese Education, and Research Center of Applied Translation.

Presently, the FFS has a teaching staff of 87. More than 85% of them are doctoral degree or postgraduate degree holders. The FFS is an academic echelon employing teaching professionals of different age with education and professional title, rich teaching experience and strong competence of scientific research. The FFS employs foreign teachers from such countries as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan every year.

Taking teaching as its central task, the FFS is committed to equipping its students with a good command of foreign languages, a solid foundation of professional knowledge, a profound range of humanistic knowledge, leadership qualities characterized by an international vision, critical thinking skills, creativity, and cooperation. Full-time enrollment has grown to 1000 students, within the undergraduate programs in English, International Economics and Trade, Japanese, and TCSOL.

The FFS gives high priority to research work, constantly improving its incentives. More than 70 teachers have presided over or participated in provincial social science projects or teaching reform projects, receiving a number of teaching achievement awards in recent years. Hundreds of academic papers have been published, most of which have been published in well-known publications.

The FFS enjoys modern teaching facilities, offering sound service for teaching. Learning facilities and resources have been built such as “Autonomous College English Learning Center”, “VOD system”, “TMT (Teach me trade)”and “English online”.

The FFS is active in domestic and international exchanges and cooperation. Every year professional teachers are sent to participate in various seminars. In recent years, renowned experts and professors such as Doctoral tutor and Professor Wang Rongpei, Dr. Liu Dilin (Professor, Oklahoma State University, United States), Dr. Li Yongzhong(Professor, Shanghai International Studies University and External Professor in the FFS), Professor Qian Duoxiu (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Doctoral tutor and Professor Lian Shuneng (Foreign Languages College of Xiamen University, Professor Chai Mingjiong (Dean of Translation Studies School of Shanghai International Studies University) have been invited to give lectures and guide professional and discipline development. In addition, several teachers and students are selected every year to conduct international exchanges and learning in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and other countries.

The FFS takes special focus on the construction of campus culture, using a variety of second-class activities to stimulate students’ interest in learning, cultivate their sentiments, and train their comprehensive ability. Various types of foreign language activities or events are organized annually such as “CCTV Cup” National English Speech Contest trials, the National College English Contest, the foreign languages song contest, English themed evenings, English debate competitions where students have made outstanding achievements, winning the honor for the university and faculty. Students also take an active part in such public welfare activities as volunteer teaching in rural areas, unpaid blood donation, helping poor students, sunshine donation project, helping the community, youth volunteers, thus developing a conscious action of and giving commitment to serving the community and the public.

The FFS has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates for the country. With continuous hard work, a proactive attitude, solid professional knowledge and comprehensive quality and ability, graduates quickly integrate into the community, make a positive contribution to the development of the non-ferrous metallurgical industry and socio-economic causes and have been well received by employers throughout China and the world. A number of excellent students enter prestigious universities at home and abroad to continue to pursue master and doctoral degrees every year.

Having a long tradition of “foresight and concerted efforts”, the FFS continues to insist on the school motto “being ambitious, responsible first”, striving to make greater contributions to cultivating international and competitive talents, promoting the development of Jiangxi in the central of China, China's nonferrous metals industry, China's economy as well as foreign exchanges.
