On the afternoon of May 4th, the conference celebrating the 78th Youth Day was held in the auditorium of Ganzhou Campus. Around 1000 faculty and student representatives attended the conference. Vice President Wen Herui addressed the conference. He put forward some hopes to the young students. On the evening of the same day, the Student Union staged a cultural performance.
The Youth Day was set aside to commemorate the May Fourth Movement, an anti-imperialist, cultural, and political movement growing out of student participants in Beijing on May 4, 1919, protesting against the Chinese government's weak response to the Treaty of Versailles, especially allowing Japan to receive territories in Shandong which had been surrendered by Germany after the Siege of Tsingtao. These demonstrations sparked national protests and marked the upsurge of Chinese nationalism.
